Lockheed Martin's communications satellites for Tranche 1 of the Space Development Agency's Transport Layer have passed a critical design review. The company built a 3D-printed, full-size replica of the upcoming spacecraft for the design review, which also included an optical communications terminal interoperability test. According to Kevin Huttenhoff, senior manager for space data transport at Lockheed, the company worked with SDA to “thoroughly validate” the Tranche 1 satellites. Lockheed Martin will assemble 42 satellites for the Transport Layer that will be launched beginning in late 2024, SpaceNews reported.

Japan Receives Delivery of New MAD-XR Sensors From CAE
CAE has delivered the first Magnetic Anomaly Detection-Extended Role sensors to its long-time partner Mitsubishi Electric Corp. The Japanese company will install the system on board the Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force's new P1 maritime patrol aircraft.According to CAE, the system is based on the MAD magnetometers the company supplies to navies around the world. It is capable of detecting changes in the Earth's magnetic field for various applications, including anti-submarine warfare operations. The technology also comes with reduced weight and power requirements and enhanced range and sensitivity compared to its predecessors. In a statement, Marc-Olivier Sabourin, vice president and general manager for global defense and security at CAE, the highly sensitive magnetometer can provide submarine detection and localization capabilities on board manned and unmanned platforms operating in challenging landscapes.CAE was awarded a multi-year contract to deliver, integrate and sustain the MAD-XR systems to support the JMSDF's fixed-wing anti-submarine operations.
BNL Study Targets Reduced Junk Buildup in Membranes
Scientists at Brookhaven National Laboratory and partner institutions have sought to understand how interactions between natural organic matter and positively charged ions usually found in water from dissolved minerals and salts can cause junk to pile up on the surface of membranes for water treatment applications. In a study published in the Journal of Membrane Science, the team harnessed synchrotron characterization techniques to assess the surface and bulk compositions of fouled membranes. Experiments showed that "synergistic" fouling, which involves contaminants competing with each other, could induce less fouling, the laboratory said Monday.
CodeMettle to Deliver C2 Platform Support to National Guard AFSPECWAR
CodeMettle has secured a contract to provide software management and configurations for the National Guard Air Force Special Warfare's all-domain agile command and control systems. CodeMettle will provide its NetOps software, a platform-agnostic solution that provides a single management interface to users. The NetOps software will be bundled with AFSPECWAR's C2 systems, creating a simplified node ecosystem that gives airmen enhanced electronic warfare, radiofrequency, tactical data link and other tactical capabilities. The C2 ecosystem will be displayed through the hardware system provided by Weapons & Tactical Alliance Group, CodeMettle said Monday.
Singapore Red Cross Starts Accepting Crypto Donations Through Triple-A’s Payment Gateway
The Singapore Red Cross has partnered with Triple-A to accept various types of cryptocurrency donations, such as bitcoin, ethereum, and tether. Using Triple-A's crypto payment gateway systems, all crypto donations to the organization will be converted into fiat currency and settled through a bank transfer within one business day. According to Singapore Red Cross Secretary General and CEO Benjamin William, crypto donations offer efficient processing and greater accessibility to philanthropists wishing to help using their digital assets. Triple-A CEO Eric Barbier added that crypto payments facilitate faster and more secure transactions, reduce administrative overheads, and ensure that funds are delivered promptly. The new payment option is live, and donations can now be made through the Singapore Red Cross' website, FinTech Finance News reported.
Viasat Secures $80M in Multi-Domain AESA Contracts
Viasat has secured multiple contracts worth $80 million in total to develop active electronically scanned array systems for land, sea and space applications. Heanne Atwell, general manager of Viasat's Arizona Operations, said the contracts will ensure that AESA improvements will translate to an enhanced sensor, satellite communications and line-of-sight communications. Viasat will use its commercial AESA phased array antenna technology and products to meet defense requirements. The contracts would also extend phased array technology to support additional operational environments and mission needs, Viasat said Monday.
Leidos, Permion Partner on Accelerating AI Solutions in National Security
Leidos and artificial intelligence and machine learning platform company Permion have announced a strategic collaboration to accelerate the adoption of AI in critical national security missions. As part of the partnership, Leidos looks to use Permion's X-Machines Instruction Set Architecture, a data-oriented computing platform for AI, to improve applications and capabilities that can be deployed on the tactical edge, on-premises or in the cloud. The collaboration is also developing and testing an additional explainable knowledge-graph generative AI/large language model cognitive solution based on Permion's current Open-Source Intelligence and Relationship Inference System and built on XVM-ISA, Leidos said Monday.
LANL to Showcase Upgraded Key Value Store Computational Storage Device
Los Alamos National Laboratory, in cooperation with SK hynix, is set to demonstrate recent enhancements to the Key Value Store Computational Storage Device at the 2023 Flash Memory Summit. Gary Grider, leader of LANL's high performance computing division, said changes to the device will provide users with resources to approach data analytics of large-scale simulation projects. New features include the secondary index functionality, reducing KV-CSD's data retrieval and enabling an index to extend beyond the primary key into the value, the laboratory said.
